Problem + Solution

Kaitlyn, who worked a stressful job, uses happy hours to relax and bond with coworkers. She needed a way to find happy hours that were accurate when she was on the go. I designed the mobile app, HAPPIE that enables Kaitlyn to search for Happy Hours, by location, time and even curate previous favorites. Her favorite part about the app was that the user could report incorrect information to alert others on the app decreasing the possibility of any "embarrassing change of plans".

User research

After conversing with Kaitlyn for a short period of time, a handful of pain points had surfaced. One that stood out the most to me was the method in which she found happy hours. Wanting to further investigate, I flushed out a user interview script that helped guide me.

If you have a magic wand, what would you want this app to do?

AFFINITY DIAGRAM

I organized my findings from the interview I conducted with Kaitlyn into an Affinity Diagram. This exercise helped me identify trends in the answers given by Kaitlyn, like how she likes to save money and valued money while despising incorrect information.

"Yes to money, no to inaccuracy"

Persona

I crafted a persona for Kaitlyn that helped me look at her holistically. The persona consisted of a general bio, goals, pain points, and interests.

Competitive Task Analysis

I first conducted a competitive feature analysis with an app and a website Kaitlyn has previously used to understand existing features and pain-points. In order to create an efficient experience on the app, I also conducted a task analysis of the most common way she searched for them: Google.

Strategy

Storyboarding

I used the information that Kaitlyn told me during our interview to sketch a storyboard of how she usually ended up looking for happy hours and what the results have been. This gave me a tremendous amount of context.

Sitemap

I conceptualized a simple sitemap enlisting the hierarchy my design needed to have to provide Kaitlyn a seamless experience. I kept in mind the notable features that the competitors had to offer and Kaitlyn's main goals and pain points.

DESIGN

LO-Fi Wireframes

I sketched various ideas for how the landing page, a results page and how a specific selection should look like and included notes on how the interactions should be.

Prototype

After drawing out more detailed sketches, I created a prototype with them using InVision. The next step is to test this with Kaitlyn and understand what is working and what is not and iterate accordingly.
